Minor pick-up tail gate.

Post by starider »

Hi,
Had some correspondence with the owner of a newly restored pick-up who finds the tail gate will not drop down to horizontal and beyond because it rests on the rubber "bumpers". he has sent me pictures of the rear end.It all looks OK but it's about 12 years since I restored a pick-up so I may have missed some thing.
I have advised he join these pages and ask the question, but I would be interested as well.Is it that the bumpers for the P-up are not so deep?? I'm sure someone[maybe Russ] will help sort this one................. starider :)

If a replacement rear panel has been fitted, it is likely the tapped holes for fixing the rubbers, are set too high. some replacement panels are pretty poor. Or a slim chance the panel itself has been fitted incorrectly. The tailgate on mine does just touch these rubbers. I’m only aware of these ‘bumpers’ being fitted to Minor LCVs so none less deep.

Hi,
The owner has emailed me several pics. and although they are good photographs I can't be sure whether or not the rubbers in the correct place. He did say the hinge panel was new, so it would seem that could be the problem. I have suggested he joins this Forum and posts the pictures for folks to comment/suggest...................starider.

Well if he does post some pictures, it would be interesting to compare the position of the rubbers fitted on his vehicle with those fitted to my pickup.

While searching online parts catalogs awhile back it appeared there were two size bumpers. Van vs pickup? Model year differences? The gate on my now deceased pickup just touched the small bumpers but it was a little below horizontal. Chain stretch perhaps.

Hi, Having looked again at the pictures supplied to me and now the Forum, looking at picture 2 the rubbers look too high, surely the top surface of the rubber should be level with the top of the swivel part of the hinge when the hinge is horizontal, I stand to be corrected. If I am correct the rubbers are too high.................starider :)

Hi, It shows how well these forums help others with problems.Paul telephoned me after seeing my name for the Devon and Somerset rep.for help and advice. We had quite a chat and he offered to send pictures. Having looked at them I said I thought the rubbers were wrongly fitted but suggested he post the pics. on this Forum.
Thanks to les who confirmed my thoughts, Paul should be able to rectify the problem. Thanks les................starider :D

I can only think it’s a matter of relocation of the holes for the rubber blocks, difficult as captive nuts are welded to the back of the panel, and in any event it could mean they would then overhang at the bottom of the rear panel. I’m not convinced the panel is as the original. Unless of course, unbeknown to me, there are in fact alternative blocks of different dimensions. Hopefully Paul will find a solution, to his liking.

Many thanks to all for your helpful and quick comments. It is worth joining the Club for this!
Your comments have given me plenty to think about. It will have to be sorted as I cannot live with the tailgate not opening flat!
I am pretty sure the replacement panels are correct. They came from Andrew Eggleton who advertises on the back of the club magazine.
The blocks I double checked with the Morris Minor Centre that they were correct
If anyone has any other advice please let me know
Paul
